The story of a high school field trip gone horribly wrong is brought to you by Blumhouse Television and EPIX. Seven misfit students must come together to fight a gang of inhuman savages that are rising in size. In a harsh, terrifying fight for survival, the group's trust in one another is put to the test, and they must take down the homicidal zombie beasts... before they kill each other.
The dead, sort-of-dead, or significantly transformed, who return back to life and cause chaos and death to all the regular people that remain are the subjects of zombie movies and television series. On the surface, this horror subgenre is all about the monsters and the jump scares. On a deeper level, zombies and the settings in which they materialize can be utilized to examine the human condition and discover the true monsters of humanity who emerge when society comes apart when they are used effectively.
Unhuman, a new film, tries to combine the best of both worlds. It attempts to achieve a decent balance between shallow thrills and social critique. It aspires to be more than a cliché, and it succeeds in some ways while failing in others.
Unhuman is a film directed by Marcus Dunstan and based on a script he co-wrote with Patrick Melton. It depicts the narrative of a disastrous high school field trip. A group of students who go on a field trip for extra credit finds themselves in a fight for their lives as they are pursued by a horde of vicious zombie-like creatures.
Ever, a young timid student played by Brianne Tju, and seven other students attempt to live in the woods, but as tensions rise among the group, it becomes evident that something far eviler is at work.
This appears to be a very simple plot. To survive what could be a zombie apocalypse, a group of humans must join together. And you'd be right in thinking that this type of scenario has been done to death. On the other hand, one could argue that what makes a narrative stand out is not how often it is repeated, but how it is told. This is where Unhuman's power comes into play.
On a visual level, filmmaker Dunstan creates a universe full of brilliant colors and lively conversation for spectators to enjoy. The film moves at a quick speed, but it never feels rushed. This is in contrast to most horror films in this style, when the colors on screen mirror the bleakness of the situation, providing for a dismal visual experience. This compensates for the fact that many of the characters are familiar with high school student stereotypes.
There are arrogant jocks, shallow mean-girl cheerleaders, outcasts, nerds, and so on. The cast, who do the best they can with their cookie-cutter roles, is the redeeming grace of these unoriginal clichés.
