"Minions: Rise of Gru" is unexpectedly made with kiddos in mind. Co-directors Kyle Balda, Brad Ableton, and Jonathan Del Val confidently know their target audience. The movie here is enough for everyone to enjoy. The film is aimed at children.

The film, set in the 1970s, is an origin story for one of the planet's worst villains, Gru. Gru is just a boy growing up. And he idolizes the supervillain group known as the Vicious 6. When God decides to apply to become a member. So it is not taken. Preteen is taken under the wing of the mythical and nefarious Wild Knuckles. Which teaches him a thing or two about being bad.

This is a good story. Especially when God is kidnapped. And they have to depend on their army to save that day. It makes for a thrill. Which is full of exciting action sequences. The retro setting lends itself well to a soundtrack full of oldies, along with fun visual gags. Which would make her mom and dad happy.

Little Yellow spends most of the time in the film on friends. Whose shenanigans are amusing. Surely there are many jokes. And the wise are not always motivated or sophisticated. But it's still fun to hear the mischievous but good-hearted minor speak in their weird brand of Pig Latin. While he participates in goofball antics.

The colorful animation is very detailed. And I can't criticize anything about technical prowess. The voice talent is also strong. And the movie characters are charming. The fast pace of the film makes it feel very small. And I never looked at my watch to see how much time had passed.
